These workshops were part of a process of self-purification in order to teach those participating in sit-ins, boycotts, and protest how to not retaliate. By understanding what is in one’s control and what is not, people are better able to come to terms with the fact that other people might try to harm them, verbally and physically. However, by practicing Stoicism, protesters would be better at controlling their responses, as our own actions are things we control. The example Epictetus uses is of someone at the bath. Before going to bathe, one should remind themself of what happens at the bath and if any hindrance arises in bathing one must think, It was not only to bathe that I desired, but to keep my mind in a state conformable to nature; and I will not keep it if I am bothered at things that happen, (Epictetus, 4). Each of these groups has a different opinion about the reputation of King and othe r advocates but that doesn’t stop the Civil Rights Movement from trudging on. Epictetus believes that anyone who misjudges another person, harms someone, or speaks badly of someone, is only deceiving themself (Epictetus, 42). So the middle-class blacks are deceiving themself by not fighting for their own rights and by becoming comfortable in a system built on inequality. The white moderates are deceiving themself by thinking they are doing the right thing by telling blacks to wait and, as King writes, â€Å"paternalistically [believing] he can set the timetable for another mans freedom† (King, 6). King claims that blacks had waited for over 340 years and that the word wait, which â€Å"rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity† in actuality means â€Å"Never.† (King, 6). Knowing when postponement is futile is another major component of The Enchiridion that is also part of civil disobedience. Some may look at Rule 15 of The Enchiridion and try to dispute the claim that Stoicism supports direct, nonviolent action but I disagree. This passage reads, â€Å"Is anything brought around to you? Put out your hand and take your share with moderation. Does it pass by you? Dont stop it. Is it not yet come? Dont stretch your desire towards it, but wait till it reaches you.†(Epictetus, 15) Epictetus is basically saying to wait, which King does not wish to do any longer. However, when Epictetus says this, he is only referring to materialistic things such as a spouse, a public office, or riches. Throughout The Enchiridion he dismisses the usefulness and importance of material things, preferring to attain spiritual wealth. Equality and being free from persecution based on skin color is not materialistic, it is a human right and though Epictetus writes to â€Å"wait till it reaches you† in regards to some things, he also writes â€Å"dont wish to be a general, or a senator, or a consul, but to be free.†(Epictetus, 19). King and other civil rights advocates are pushing for freedom. Epictetus encourages Stoics to, in every affair, â€Å"consider what precedes and follows, and then undertake it.† (Epictetus, 29) King clearly does this as he describes waiting for the election Albert Bottwell and negotiating about the signs denoting segregated business. When I asked my mom about the tattoo she just said it was just some cool design she got for her birthday, but now I believe the tattoo has a deeper meaning. I open my mouth to ask about the tattoo but the teacher interrupts me and says, â€Å"I knew this would happen. You are probably befuddled now and wondering what is going on. I guess first I will introduce myself. My name is Eldrick Mentoris, but you can just call me Mr. Mentoris or godfather. Your dad made me your godfather and he was, I mean is an honorable man. Shostakovich, Soviets, and Suppression Scholars and artists commonly describe music as a reflection of the human condition. The period in history from the mid-1930s onward marked a tragic phase in twentieth century music and this reflection: the total politicizing of the art by totalitarianism means. Dictators, including Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, were manipulating popular culture to take control of their people. Stalin supported the idea of a â€Å"Soviet modernism,† a school of art that would embody the power of the new proletarian state. He monitored every recording made in the country, writing judgments of â€Å"good,† â€Å"so-so,† and â€Å"bad† on their sleeves. Stalin believed music to be the engineer of the human souls, and hoped to use this as a way to influence his people that Soviet life was improving. Fearing a phone call from the dictator or being arrested in the night, Soviet composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich wrote music with chained hands in an effort to please the ir leader. Short groove This is the reduced area above and below the eye of the needle and is situated at the loop-taking side of the needle. It assists the formation of loop. Scarf or clearance cut This enables a closer setting of the hook or looper to the needle. It is just above the eye on the loop taking side of the needle.Scarf permits a close setting of the shuttle hook or looper to the needle. Eye The eye is the hole which goes through the blade from the long groove to the short groove. It enables to pass the needle thread. To avoid thread breakage during sewing, the eye should have a smooth surface. The thread should pass freely through the eye but not too loosely. Otherwise it will interfere with proper loop formation. Point The point of needle can have different shapes. The type of point should be correctly chosen in order to prevent any damages to the material being sewn. These enable the needle to penetrate fabrics whether woven, knitted or non-woven, easily without damaging the yarns or fibers. There are different types of cloth point. What most people can’t seem to agree on is whether or not human activity is playing some role in it. From media outlets to internet forums, the debate is being fought on all fronts. Most of these arguments, however, are just personal opinions and poorly-made observations from the comfort of a gas-guzzling SUV.
